Daft Punk: One More Time

You know the horn riff. It is one of five samples hiding in this track.

One More Time, 2000

One More Time was released on 13 November 2000 on Virgin, as the lead single from Discovery. It reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 1 on the US Dance Club Songs chart. For this sample story, the place to start is its horn hook, which comes from Eddie Johns' More Spell On You.

The voice and the horns

The vocal was written and performed by Romanthony and processed with Auto-Tune. The horn hook has a different source: it is sampled from More Spell On You, a disco track by Eddie Johns from the late 1970s. Sources differ on its release year, so we keep the date as late 1970s. One More Time takes multiple elements from the Eddie Johns record, including that horn hook, rather than the horns alone.

Everything they sampled

WhoSampled lists five samples in One More Time. Alongside Eddie Johns are drums from Loose Joints' Is It All Over My Face? (Female Vocal), released in 1980. Two more drum samples come from Tracks 31 and 28 of Ueberschall's Overdub Sensation sample library, from 1994. The fifth sample is a sound effect from The Hollywood Edge Sound Effects Library, from 1990: Single Low-Pitched Clock Tower Bell Toll With Long Ring-Off. The two Ueberschall loops are grouped together below, giving four lines for the five samples.

  • Eddie Johns, More Spell On You (late 1970s): multiple elements, including the horn hook.
  • Loose Joints, Is It All Over My Face? (Female Vocal) (1980): drums.
  • Two drum loops from Ueberschall's Overdub Sensation sample library (1994)
  • The Hollywood Edge Sound Effects Library (1990): Single Low-Pitched Clock Tower Bell Toll With Long Ring-Off, a sound effect.

Johns was not credited, and in 2021 it was reported that he had never been paid. That report is part of the story alongside the release date, chart positions and sample source.
