Eliza Rose & Interplanetary Criminal: B.O.T.A.
The biggest UK club record of 2022 is the end of a sample chain going back to 1986.
B.O.T.A., 2022
B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All) was first released on 15 June 2022 on Eliza Rose's own label, Rosebud Recordings. A wider release followed on 12 August 2022 through Warner. Eliza Rose wrote and sang the track, while Manchester producer Interplanetary Criminal produced it. Its sample leads back to Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam's Let the Beat Hit 'Em, from 1991.
From Rosebud to No. 1
The record was UK No. 1 for two consecutive weeks and became the 1,400th UK No. 1 single. Those two milestones sit alongside its release story: first on Rosebud Recordings in June, then through Warner in August. The names on B.O.T.A. are Eliza Rose and Interplanetary Criminal, with Rose writing and singing and the Manchester producer responsible for its production.
A first since Sonique
B.O.T.A. was also the first No. 1 by a female DJ since Sonique's It Feels So Good in 2000. That comparison reaches back to a different UK No. 1, while the sample reaches further back still, to 1991. The two connections are distinct: Sonique marks the earlier chart milestone, and Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam provide the record sampled by B.O.T.A.
The sample chain
B.O.T.A. samples Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's Let The Beat Hit 'Em (LL W/ Love RC Mix), from 1991. That mix itself samples the vocals and lyrics of Dhar Braxton featuring Chocolette's Jump Back (Set Me Free), released in 1986 on Sleeping Bag Records. The chain runs from B.O.T.A. through the Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam mix to Jump Back. Our crate has house and garage 12-inches from £2.49, and we want Dhar Braxton's Jump Back on 12-inch too.
